When Shake Shack, the beloved American burger chain famous for its elevated fast-casual dining experience, set its sights on Calgary for its first Alberta location, they partnered with BUILD IT Calgary to turn their vision into reality. Securing a prime space on the upper level of CF Chinook Centre, Calgary’s premier shopping and entertainment destination, the project demanded a high level of logistical coordination. As one of the busiest retail hubs in Western Canada, CF Chinook Centre commands immense foot traffic and high visibility. This meant our construction process had to strictly adhere to mall operational guidelines, demanding timelines, and rigorous safety standards, all while smoothly executing heavy construction without disrupting the daily flow of the surrounding retail environment.

Shake Shack is much more than a traditional fast-food restaurant. It is a modern, community-focused brand renowned for its warm hospitality, premium ingredients, and highly curated architectural aesthetic. To successfully introduce this cult-favorite brand to Calgarians, the physical space had to flawlessly reflect Shake Shack’s signature blend of contemporary design and a comfortable, welcoming energy. While focusing heavily on the front-of-house aesthetic, our team at BUILD IT Calgary expertly managed the complex, behind-the-scenes requirements of the build. We seamlessly integrated robust mechanical, electrical, and high-capacity commercial kitchen systems into the mall’s existing infrastructure to support the restaurant’s intense made-to-order culinary operations. In the dining area, we executed the precise installation of premium millwork, sleek modern seating, and specialized architectural lighting to recreate the iconic, vibrant Shake Shack atmosphere. The build also beautifully highlights the brand’s commitment to community integration, ensuring the interior architecture perfectly frames the colorful, Calgary-themed murals painted by local artist Irene Neyman that anchor the space.

The highly anticipated opening of Shake Shack at CF Chinook Centre represents a major milestone for Calgary’s rapidly evolving food scene.
