Bringing a highly anticipated culinary brand to a new city requires precision, expertise, and a deep appreciation for the client’s vision. When Vancouver’s celebrated hand-roll bar, Hello Nori, decided to open its very first location in Calgary, they trusted BUILD IT Calgary as the General Contractor to execute their stunning concept. Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Bridgeland, this build required translating the brand’s signature modern Japanese aesthetic into a functional, high-traffic dining space that would captivate Calgary’s rapidly evolving food scene.

Hello Nori is renowned not just for its premium made-to-order temaki, but for its breathtaking, architecturally distinct interiors. The concept relies heavily on an inherently theatrical dining experience, designed to immerse guests in the culinary process from the moment they walk through the doors. A major focal point of the space is the complex, highly customized millwork necessary to bring this ambitious vision to life. As the General Contractor, our role was to oversee and flawlessly integrate these specialized elements into a pristine, high-end environment. The space needed to feel impeccably clean and modern, requiring precise coordination to seamlessly blend the stunning finish carpentry and architectural elements with the raw bar prep stations directly in the public dining area.

The undisputed hallmark of the Bridgeland location is its spectacular custom wooden ceiling—a signature element of the Hello Nori brand tailored specifically for this market. The design called for a sprawling, tree-like structure sprouting from behind the bar, featuring complex waves in the paneling deliberately designed to represent the rolling Alberta foothills. We meticulously managed the site and coordinated the installation of this massive architectural feature alongside specialized millworkers, ensuring the surrounding structure was perfectly prepared to support it flawlessly. Below this striking wooden canopy sits the centerpiece of the restaurant: a large, U-shaped bar where guests are seated to watch chefs craft hand rolls in real-time. We oversaw the integration of this central feature, bringing together premium stone countertops and highly detailed wood paneling to provide the perfect, durable stage for the restaurant’s interactive dining experience.

Today, Hello Nori Bridgeland stands as a masterclass in modern commercial construction. BUILD IT Calgary successfully delivered an immersive, 360-degree dining environment that honors the brand’s coastal roots while providing a beautiful, localized nod to its new Alberta home. The result is a beautifully crafted space where the exceptional coordination and quality of the build perfectly match the culinary artistry on the plate.
