Calgary Parks - Bowmont Park

Bowmont Park is a large park in Calgary. It is situated on the north bank of the Bow River and contains several areas of interest. The park offers numerous hiking trails and picnic areas for visitors to enjoy. In addition to its scenic surroundings, the park is home to many wildlife species. There are also a few unique geological formations, including cliffs and a spongy geological formation.

You can explore Bowmont Park by foot, bike, or kayak. The park includes many singletrack trails, some ideal for hiking. You can also try mountain biking on some of the trails. Besides its hiking and cycling opportunities, the park has a baseball field, a soccer field, and several playgrounds for children. Those who enjoy nature can also visit a scenic lookout overlooking the Bow River Valley.

Another great feature of Bowmont Park is that it is a great place to take your dog. With fenced off-leash dog areas and paved pathways for dogs, the park is ideal for a day with your furry companion. While the park is relatively easy to navigate, it could be better marked. If you are traveling with your pet, follow the park’s rules and instructions for dogs.

Aside from the many recreational activities at the park, you can also visit the nearby Shouldice Aquatic Centre and Arena. This facility is a good option for families with kids. They will find it easy to access the river for swimming and to play. During the summer, they can even enjoy an outdoor movie. Additionally, the facility has tennis courts and batting cages for players to use.

Located on the north side of the Bow River, Bowmont Park is one of the city’s most important sources of habitat diversity. It includes several off-shore islands and valleys fed by permanent water sources. These areas are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including Canada Geese, Common Mergansers, and gulls. Several species of warblers travel along the river. Trees along the river are wrapped in wire to protect them from being cut down.

Among the unique features of the park is the Waterfall Valley. This area runs from the south end of Silver Springs Boulevard down to the river below. It has a three-meter-high waterfall and a range of fun structures, making it an excellent destination for families. The park is also a good spot for bird-watching.

Other attractions at Bowmont Park include the Nautilus Pond, which is perfect for fishing. For the more adventurous, you can try hiking in the 164-hectare park. Many of the trails are surrounded by cliffs, making it a nice place to watch the scenery and enjoy the natural beauty.

As of now, the Bowmont Park Management Plan Improvement Project is in review. The plan proposes changes to the boundaries of off-leash dog areas and waste disposal stations. Some dog owners are circulating a petition to retain these areas.
