If you’re looking for an exciting walk in downtown Calgary, Stephen Avenue Walk is the place for you. It’s a popular destination featuring an eclectic mix of retail shops, restaurants, and hotels. Plus, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy a nice glass of wine or coffee with friends or co-workers. You can quickly get around the area on foot, by bike, or by public transit.
Stephen Avenue is located between Macleod Trail and 4th Street Southwest in the city’s heart. Explore many exciting stores, restaurants, hotels, and museums. You can also take a short stroll to the Mewata Armoury, the Glenbow Museum, and the Telus Convention Centre. Stephen Avenue Walk is also a good option for cyclists. With a single lane of car traffic on the avenue, finding a spot to lock your bike is easy. The street has several bike racks to help ensure your safety. While on Stephen Avenue, you can stroll to nearby attractions such as the YYC Glowfest.
Stephen Avenue is a national historical site where Canada’s rich architectural heritage is displayed. Some of the oldest buildings on the walk were built to withstand fire. In addition, the avenue has some registered historic sandstone buildings.
To make Stephen Avenue a better place, some changes are being made. The city has launched a plan to transform the west end of the walk into an urban village. As part of the plan, 575 new homes are being built. A three-tower residential development will add 90,000 square feet of commercial space. Likewise, the University of Calgary’s downtown campus is being planned. And the redevelopment of Century Gardens park on 8th street is a critical element of transforming the western portion of the walk. Another plan is to develop a pedestrian mall on half of the street. This would require programming and patios, and a lot of open space to be created. Ideally, these would be year-round. However, that isn’t a guarantee.
Also on the agenda is a redesign of the facade of the Glenbow Museum. The remodel will include a revamped exhibition area, allowing visitors to view the museum’s collection better. An additional $115 million is being spent on a major renovation, bringing the museum into the modern era. Ultimately, the museum will be moved to the center of the new Olympic Plaza Cultural District. As the west end of Stephen Avenue Walk comes to life, it’s likely to attract various businesses. Aside from the CORE shopping center, you can expect many restaurants and cafes on the street. One of the most popular is the Met Cafe, a longstanding and popular establishment on the walk.
You can also head to the Hyatt Regency, a hotel with several historic buildings. Or, you can check out the Barron Building, a former office building currently being converted into a residential building.
